Barn Dance Band Practice

2nd Saturdays, 2-4 PM (September through April)

First Church of Lombard
220 S. Main St., Lombard

The Barn Dance Band Practice is open to anyone who wants to strengthen their skills in participating in playing for the Plank Road Barn Dance Parties (held about three times a year). Recommended for intermediate to advanced players. However, if you would prefer starting to build skills at more of an introductory level, watch for workshops and classes through Plank Road Folk Music Society designed to teach the basic building blocks of band playing skills and/or building fiddle tune repertoire so less experienced players can better keep up at the practice sessions. Additionally, there is a page on the Plank Road website (in progress) that is contains chord sheets and MP3 files to assist in learning the tunes more commonly played at Plank Road Dances. (Go to www.plankroad.org and click on Favorites and then Stringband Materials.)

Monthly: 2nd Saturday, 2-4 PM (September through April)

For information call (630) 620-0688.

All acoustic folk instruments welcome. Open to anyone who wants to learn the leads or backups for fiddle tunes, and to give the All Volunteer String Band a common base of tunes to draw from for upcoming Barn Dances. We work both on melodies and on back up, as well as some work with arranging. We also are working on learning how to play for dances.. what works to encourage the dancers, what works to encourage the musicians; how to play faster; how to keep together in a group of 15 to 20 musicians; how to follow the caller; etc.
For more information, call Jennifer Shilt at (630) 620-0688
